Hello! My name is Tanner Hartman and I am a 3D Hard Surface artist!
I specialize in the creation of detailed, photo-realistic CG weapons and props.
I tend to think of stories when creating; How did this object get here? Where did it come from? Who used it? These questions help me flesh out my concept and bring a model up from a beautiful render, to a worn artifact that has its own history and story to tell. I try to concept in the beginning stages to make sure I have all my ideas on paper. With my traditional background in 2D artwork, I am able to quickly create numerous renders with different variations to choose from and process. Though I am not a historian by any stretch, my concepts usually consist of historical pieces. I thoroughly enjoy ancient civilizations and their beliefs, past wars and conflicts, mechanical and technological breakthroughs; it all fascinates me and inspires me to create unique models. I try to be as original as possible while still possessing the original form and functionality of the object of inspiration. I may bend and stretch time a little bit in order to create something unique and different, but it's very fun and allows me live out my dream of being a time traveler.
I can create all these concepts and models that look good to me, but ultimately what I like may not jive with someone else. I always make sure to get insight; whether that's professional or peer-to-peer. I feel like you always need someone else's point of view to make a good piece great. Having worked with large teams in the past, I know that it takes a lot of hands to make something work and the same can be said with modeling. Even if it's just one prop, having the insight from your team can make all the difference.
I'm always looking ahead; the next project, the next challenge, the next goal. 3D modeling is my passion and this industry pushes me to create the best possible work I am able to achieve. I am constantly wanting to learn and build on what I know, and this industry motivates me to do just that.
